Why Your Child Won’t Fall Asleep (And How Acupuncture Points Can Help)

Bedtime can feel like the longest hour of the day for many families.

If your child won’t fall asleep, bedtime can quickly turn into a stressful routine of negotiating, repeated trips out of bed, and exhausted parents wondering what they are doing wrong.

You start the routine.
Pyjamas are on.
The lights are dim.

And yet somehow… your child is still wide awake.

They might be wriggling, asking questions, getting out of bed, or saying they feel “not tired” even though their body clearly needs sleep.

Many families experience these children bedtime struggles, where a child seems tired but simply cannot settle.

But from a Chinese medicine perspective, there are often clear reasons why children find it difficult to fall asleep — and gentle ways to support them.

Why Some Children Struggle to Fall Asleep at Night

Children often struggle to fall asleep because their nervous system is still very active at the end of the day.

Modern life exposes children to a lot of stimulation:

• busy school days
• after-school activities
• screens and bright light
• emotional ups and downs
• tired but wired bodies

By bedtime, their minds and bodies can feel restless rather than calm.

In Chinese medicine, this is often described as the mind not settling properly at night.

Sometimes this can relate to patterns that Chinese medicine practitioners recognise, such as Heart Yin deficiency (where the mind feels restless and unable to settle), Liver Yang rising (which can create agitation or a feeling of being “tired but wired”), or Liver Qi that has not fully settled after a busy day, making it harder for the Shen (the mind and spirit) to become calm and ready for sleep.

These patterns don’t mean something is “wrong” with your child — they simply describe how the body’s energy may still be active at the end of the day and may need gentle support to transition into sleep.

Instead of the body naturally shifting into a calm, sleepy state, children may feel:

• fidgety
• emotionally sensitive
• unable to relax
• “buzzing” with energy
• unable to switch off

It simply means their body may need a little help transitioning into sleep mode.

This is why many parents start looking for natural sleep support for kids that can gently help the body settle at night.

Calming Children Before Bed

One of the most helpful things parents can do is focus on calming children before bed.

A predictable wind-down period helps signal to the body that sleep is approaching.

When bedtime becomes calm and consistent, children often find it easier to relax and drift off to sleep.

This might include:

• dimming the lights
• quiet play or reading
• gentle breathing exercises
• calming touch
• a predictable bedtime routine

Over time, these signals help the body move more easily into sleep mode.

A consistent bedtime routine for kids can make a big difference in helping children feel safe, relaxed, and ready to sleep.

Acupuncture Points for Sleep

Chinese medicine has used acupuncture points for sleep for thousands of years to calm the nervous system and support rest.

These points help signal the body to shift from an active state into a more relaxed and settled state.

When gentle stimulation is applied to certain points, it may help:

• relax the body
• settle restless energy
• calm the mind before sleep
• support the body’s natural sleep rhythm

Traditionally these points would be stimulated using acupuncture needles.

However, there are now needle-free options that make this approach simple and accessible for parents to use at home.

A Gentle At-Home Option: Acupressure Magnets

One way to stimulate calming acupuncture points is through small wearable magnets placed on specific points on the body.

These magnets stay on the skin for several hours — including overnight — providing gentle, continuous stimulation of the point.

Many parents like this approach because it is:

• simple to use
• non-invasive
• needle-free
• comfortable for children
• easy to include in a bedtime routine

The magnets can be placed before bed and left on while your child sleeps.

The Missing Piece: Connection and Bedtime Ritual

In my experience as an acupuncturist, the points themselves are only one part of the picture.

What often makes the biggest difference is the connection between parent and child during the bedtime routine.

Children settle more easily when bedtime becomes a predictable calming ritual rather than a nightly struggle.

This might include:

• gentle breathing together
• helping children relax their bodies
• simple calming techniques
• creating a peaceful bedtime environment

When these elements work together, bedtime can transform from a stressful negotiation into a calmer experience for both parent and child.

A New Resource for Parents (Coming Soon)

Because this combination can be so powerful, I am currently creating a short online video course for parents.

This course will show you:

• how to use calming acupuncture points safely at home
• where to place the sleep magnets
• simple calming techniques children can learn
• how to create a smoother bedtime routine
• ways to help children settle their bodies and minds

The course is designed to work alongside the Sleep Acu-Magnets, creating a simple system parents can use every night.

A Gentle Approach to Better Bedtimes

Every child is different.

Some children fall asleep easily, while others need a little more support calming their bodies and minds at night.

By helping children regulate their energy, feel calm and safe, and develop a consistent bedtime rhythm, sleep often becomes much easier.

Sometimes the smallest tools — used consistently — can make the biggest difference.
